1. Introduction
At Tildabelles, we are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for children aged 6 to 12 years old to explore their creativity through arts and crafts activities. This Health and Safety Policy outlines our approach to managing health and safety risks related to the activities we provide, including the use of materials such as clay, paint, scissors, glue, and other craft tools.
We will take all necessary precautions to minimize risks and ensure that children are supervised at all times. This policy also includes guidelines on accident reporting, staff training, and the safe use of craft materials.
2. General Health and Safety Guidelines
- Risk Assessment: A comprehensive risk assessment will be carried out before each craft activity to identify and manage potential hazards (e.g., sharp objects, toxic materials). Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly.
- Supervision: Children will be closely supervised during all activities to ensure safe handling of materials and equipment. There will always be an appropriate ratio of staff to children, ensuring no child is left unsupervised.
- Age-Appropriate Activities: All activities and materials used will be suitable for the age group of 6 to 12 years old. Staff will adapt the tasks and tools accordingly to ensure they are safe and manageable for the children.
3. Safe Use of Tools and Materials
Given the use of tools like scissors, clay tools, and glue, we have set out the following guidelines to ensure the safe use of materials:
-
Scissors and Cutting Tools:
- Children will be instructed on how to use scissors and cutting tools properly, and will be supervised when using them. Scissors with rounded tips will be provided for younger children.
- Scissors will be stored safely when not in use, and children will be taught to pass scissors safely to others (by the handle).
- Children will be reminded to keep scissors pointed down and to walk while holding them.
-
Clay and Dough:
- Children will be supervised while using clay and other modeling materials to ensure they don’t put these items in their mouths.
- Staff will make sure all clay and dough used is non-toxic and safe for children.
- Children will be reminded to wash their hands after handling clay or dough to maintain hygiene.
-
Paint, Glue and Adhesives:
- Only non-toxic, child-safe glue and paint will be used in the club.
- Children will be shown how to use paint and glue bottles and containers properly to avoid spills or overuse.
- Staff will supervise children while using paint and glue and will ensure that children don’t get glue on their skin or eyes.
- If paint or glue is spilled, staff will immediately clean it up to prevent slipping hazards.
-
Sharp Objects (e.g., craft knives, carving tools):
- Sharp tools will only be used by children under direct staff supervision and with prior instruction on their safe handling.
- Children will be provided with appropriate, child-friendly tools whenever possible.
- Any sharp tools will be stored securely out of reach of children when not in use.
4. First Aid and Emergency Procedures
- First-Aid Kit: A fully stocked first-aid kit will be available at all times in an accessible and clearly marked location. It will include plasters, bandages, antiseptic wipes, gloves, and any other items necessary for minor injuries.
- First Aid Training: At least one staff member will be trained in basic first aid and CPR. Staff will know how to manage minor injuries and accidents, such as cuts or burns, and will take immediate action when needed.
- Reporting Injuries: All accidents or injuries, no matter how small, will be recorded in an incident log. Parents or guardians will be notified of any injuries, and they will be provided with a copy of the incident report.
5. Emergency Procedures
In case of an emergency, such as fire, medical emergency, or an accident, the following procedures will be followed:
-
Fire Safety:
- Fire exits will be clearly marked, and evacuation routes will be practiced regularly.
- A fire drill will be conducted at least once per term to ensure children and staff know how to evacuate the building safely.
- The fire alarm system and emergency exits will be checked regularly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
- We will follow the community centres fire drill procedure.
-
Medical Emergencies:
- In the event of a medical emergency (e.g., allergic reaction, fainting, severe injury), the staff will immediately call emergency services if necessary and contact the child's parents.
- Children with known medical conditions (e.g., allergies) will be asked to provide detailed information upon registration, and appropriate measures will be put in place to manage their condition (e.g., having an EpiPen for an allergic child).
-
Accident Reporting:
- Any serious accidents or injuries will be reported to the relevant authorities, including the local health and safety executive if needed, and parents will be informed immediately.
6. Hygiene and Cleanliness
- Hand Hygiene: Children will be encouraged to wash their hands regularly, especially before starting a craft activity, after using the toilet, and after using materials such as clay or glue.
- Cleaning Materials: All tools and surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected regularly to prevent the spread of germs, especially after each activity. Craft tables and chairs will be wiped down after each session.
- Waste Disposal: Any waste materials (e.g., used paper, excess glue, etc.) will be disposed of in the appropriate bins, and children will be instructed to help clean up safely at the end of the session.
7. Hazardous Materials and Special Considerations
- Non-Toxic Materials: All materials used in crafts (e.g., paints, glues, markers) will be non-toxic and safe for children. Staff will check labels and ensure that all supplies meet safety standards.
- Allergies: Parents will be asked to disclose any allergies or sensitivities their child may have when enrolling in the club. Special attention will be given to ensure that craft materials do not pose any risk to allergic children.
8. Supervision and Child Behavior
- Supervision: Children will always be supervised by an appropriate number of adults based on the group size. There will be at least one adult per 8 children to ensure all safety measures are followed.
- Behavior Management: Children will be taught the importance of respecting others and following safety instructions. Misuse of tools or materials will be addressed promptly to prevent accidents.
9. Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if changes in legislation, best practices, or the activities provided occur. Any incidents or near-misses will also be reviewed to ensure the safety measures remain effective.
